Never get caught in the cold without an emergency kit! We highly recommend having one for your car AND one for your home. While these kits aren’t meant to last you past 72 hours, they will come in handy if you ever find yourself in a winter emergency. Stalled cars or a tree falling and knocking out the power are very real winter issues that most people experience.

Winter Emergency Kit For Your Car

Here is a list of things you need for your emergency kit for your vehicle. You can find most of the items at your local grocery store or online. We recommend having this kit prepared and stored safely in your car’s trunk, just in case!

Heavy blanket: If you happen to get stuck in the snow, you don’t want to keep your car running for too long. Keep a heavy and large blanket in the car to help you stay warm if you should have to turn off your car.

Water jug: Grab one from your local grocery store for around a buck!

Jumper cables: These are always good to have in your car but extra great to have in an emergency.

Snacks: Pack semi perishable snacks like peanuts, granola bars and crackers to hold you over, if needed.

Battery operated/wireless cell phone charger: These are always good to have in the car, especially when you realize you are only at 2%.

Road flares: These come in handy if you are in a dark area that is not lit well.

Gloves: Thick waterproof winter gloves will make scraping the snow off the windshield.

Ice scraper: Chances are that you already have this in your car for the windshield but go ahead and double check.

First Aid Kit: You can find basic kits that include bandages and ointments at your local store.

Winter Emergency Kit For Your Home:

A winter emergency in your home can turn into a real nightmare for you and your family. Imagine a tree limb falls on your home and knocks out your power, it can be hours if not days until it’s fixed. Make sure that these things are in your home kit every winter.

Flashlights with extra batteries: Skip the candles, you don’t need throw another emergency on your list.

Snacks: Gather snacks that don’t require you to open the fridge if the power goes out.

Water jugs: Grab a couple of jugs to hydrate the family or use to help wash hands or other hygiene reasons.

Radio with extra batteries: Stay up to date on the weather updates with a radio, plus helps with entertainment.

First Aid Kit: You can find basic kits that include bandages and ointments at your local store.

Heavy duty plastic sheeting and duct tape: If you happen to have a broken window or a leaky roof, you can temporarily fix it heavy duty tape and a tarp.

Battery operated/wireless cell phone charger: Make sure you have a way to call for help and keep the family at peace.
